Question by Felicia: What lens is good for sports photography? easy ten.?
I want to buy a telephoto lens for my camera (panasonic dmc-fz18) and am a little confused. Its been reccomended that I get a telephoto converter lens but when i read a description of what those are for, it says “Still Photography”. I want a telephoto lens specifically for sports photography …so what should I be looking for exactly? Maybe I’m looking at the wrong type of lenses? is there a difference between a telephoto converter lens and a telephoto lens? Tn Pts. Thanks!!!

“Still Photography” simply means a still photo camera. Its not made for use on video cameras.
Your camera is a fixed lens camera so you will only be able to use a telephoto converter. Typically telephoto lens means it fits on a camera which has the ability to completely change lenses although some converter sellers refer to converters as lenses.

A good 200-300mm lens on a DSLR… there are very few converters that are worth the cost. You will see the effects of the converter in your pictures, like very soft corners, possible distortion, extra flare or other light artifacts, just generally not good shots.
Olympus and Nikon did make some pretty good teleconverters, but they are on the order of $ 350 or more, and that is IF you can find one.
Most converters also require that you leave the lens in the camera at either full wide or full telephoto, where most lenses are not at their best to begin with.
I would want a 80-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens. The constant f/2.8 low aperture could be of useful for indoor sports.

Telephoto converter won’t be that effective for action shots. It is good for ”still life photography”.
For action , you need a tele photo prime lens / tele photo zoom lens depending on your budget.
