Using a Mid Range or Standard Lens

What ‘focal length’ are our eyes? That’s a question we hear often and it’s generally considered to be around 50mm. When talking camera lenses this is often c…

  1. Thank you Dennis. Most of these vids have only been here since October and
numbers are growing steadily. If you’d like to help us grow so we can make
more vids and do podcasts etc you can help by posting and linking about our
website on forums, sharing the vids on Facebook, Google+ etc and clicking

  2. Hey mike! I hav a limited budget n I wish to buy a 50mm for m d7000. should
I go for 1.4d or 1.8g coz both are priced almost same but with d version I
get 1.4 aperture. Kindly advice soon.

  3. I was wondering your opinion Mike – am looking to be getting a prime lens
for portrait work and general family gatherings. It’s between the 35mm F1.8
and the 50mm F1.8. The only problem is, my camera crops to the value of
x1.5. Not an issue for the 35 as I can find a 35 DX lens, whereas there are
only FX 50mm for Nikon, but I’m worried that a 35 might distort portraiture
    – giving someone a 10 foot long nose or something – would it? Would a
better option be to go for a 28mm FX so it crops to 50?

  5. For portraiture with a soft background you really need longer than 50mm –
100 or more would be better because depth of field shrinks as the lens gets
longer. And longer lenses’ narrow field of view concentrate on the people
more than their surroundings. Search ‘Focal length changes 3 things’ on our
channel. I’d go for the flexibility of a zoom rather than a prime. Primes
are better quality if you really look for it – but not much. – Mike

  6. Im finding these short videos are greatly helping me. Understanding how
lenses work is mind boggling at times. I took an Amateur Course but it was
too rushed when we got to these. Thnx so much……John/Canada.

  7. And I mean close-up portraiture with focal blurring as opposed to “in
context” portraiture such as what you did with Natasha in this video
    against the rock.

  8. Hi Guys! Please note that the comparison video was shot with the v0.59
firmware. The new firmware does an even better job at displaying accurate
colours + it’s possible to tweak the colors the way you like it with the
    windows GUI.

  9. The wider angle is nice, but the standard definitely looks better. Also it
seems as if the wide angle lens puts some sort of red effect over the
entire image which is pretty annoying imo.

  10. I agree. The standard lens does look better. Was thinking of picking a
wide lens model up but I’ll just stick to my standard one.
