We’re trying to review the lens with the longest name in the world. In this video, we take a look at a Tokina lens that could be a cheap alternative to those…

  1. I own a d7000, internal focus motor is not an issue to me. But will the dxii focus faster/better than the older version? I don’t know if I need to spend the extra to buy the newer version or not

  2. i have a d7000 and am looking for wide angle lens. since it’s a DX, do you recommend the tokina 11-16, nikon 20mm f2.8, or the nikon 24 f2.8?

  3. For those that didn’t know, Tokina was originally setup by former Nikon lens employees so the pedigree was there from the start.
The build quality is superb but the lens does weigh quite a bit, I get the impression that this lens if dropped would do more damage to the pavement.
As for the look I don’t see anything wrong with it and it certainly doesn’t look cheap.
Constant f2.8 is also a bonus and it is pin sharp.
No complaints from me where this lens is concerned.

  4. Thanx romain but i have a canon 7d. i wish to use this lens for video and i want to know the difference in IQ and whether the added cost is worth it.

  5. thanx romain but i own a canon 7d… ill be using the lens for video, hence i wanted to know the difference between the two in image quality as autofocus wont matter.

  6. I own the Tokina. The Tokina is a much better choice. Why?

    1) The Tokina has a constant aperture of f/2.8, this is great for Indoor and lowlight situations. And is great for filming cause the aperture does not change when you zoom. The Nikon is not a constant aperture and is its widest aperture is f/3.5

    2) Price are almost identical

    3) My Tokina lens is SHARP! I have never used the Nikon.

Get the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8, nothing but great reviews on them.

  7. @karan, the DXII is compatible with the d3000 d5000 series from nikon. Tokina added an autofocus motor to it. So basically with a DX you need to manually focus on those cameras. With the DXII the auto focus is then enabled

  8. I bought this lens base on this review, and its image quality and performances is very good. The only down size is that the zoom range is a bit restricted

  9. Great review!!! I have the lens and love it too!!! Still own the Sigma 10-20 f4-f5.6 which is not even near to any of the Tokina parameters…tried the Canon(wide zoom for crop sensor)as well, but simply the Tokina is the best wide zoom lens!!!

  10. Wide angle is also good for perceived unstabilized video, I think that’s the trick with GoPro cameras.
I wish there was an F1.4 optical stabilized prime 😉

  11. Dave, is the Canon Eos 7d considered as one of the APS-C Crop Sensor’s or is it similar to the 5d where the quality would change when you get down to 11? I’m thinking of purchasing the lense, and really need to know! @Davedugdale

  12. i ve been using it just a few months and the ring is broken now… i used it in one location with a lot of dust. Now is stuck at 15mm… not worth the price.

  13. Hi Dave,

I am not sure if I saw this one before or not… but another great review! Thanks for all your work going through these tutorial.

    Chris
