Nikon F2AS

It was built like a tank. The viewfinder was bright and it showed 100%. The shutter speed was “stepless” (it can be set between the clicks). And it was so dependable.

  1. In the cameras I’ve had or have:
Best P&S – Casio Exilim EX-FH20 (9MP). Picture quality isn’t the best in the world, but it’s acceptable for the type of camera – however the list of bells and whistles is endless – 40fps at 7 Megapixel resolution, 5fps (7MP) with flash; 30,210,420 or 1000 fps video; motion detect on zone entry and exit; an incredible panning mode where it takes loads of photos and recombines them in-camera to produce a sharp ‘target’ against a blurred background; a stupid optical zoom with a useful 26mm wide to fairly unuseful 520mm etc etc. I never get bored of playing with it.

Best SLR – Minolta Maxxum/Dynax 9. Just a stunning camera. Nikon FM2. A beautiful masterpiece of engineering and design. Lives in a glass cabinet so everyone can see it. Joint first. I use the Nikon more often than the Minolta.

Best dSLR – Konica Minolta Maxxum/Dynax 7D. Fastest handling camera – almost every control was external, took a little bit to learn, but I can change settings on that camera faster and more ‘intuitively’ than on any other; very little menu-drilling required. Still used more often than my Alpha700.

Cameras I’ve used or seen and want one:

P&S – None, really. The Casio is more fun than anything else and I bought it for fun.
    SLR – Nikon F6
dSLR – Canon EOS 1D MkIV or Nikon 3DS. Where the word ‘sensible’ applies, then the Alpha900 ‘cos I’m committed to Minolta-compatible equipment.
dSLR Medium Format – Hasselblad H4D

Ultimate goal in life – buy a brand new Sinar P2 with 10×8 back and do it some justice.

    Replace ‘goal’ with ‘pipe-dream’
