The in camera b/w settings should be avoided . (even if the camera has them). Shoot for B/W with your camera (exposure, contrast etc.) and post process the image. Photoshop elements and GIMP (the free down load) can do the job. An easy to use and free software is IRFANVIEW which can also be used.

  1. The Sony Nex 3/5 give you the option to shot in RAW. I would recommend shooting in RAW or RAW +Jpeg. When you use the software that came with the camera you can choose to render your RAW file in B&W. It will be an option under the “Creative style” tab. The program that Sony tends to use is called Image Data Converter. A lot of pro’s prefer Adobe Light Room or Adobe Camera RAW but I personally think IDC is fine and use it for all my RAW processing. After adjusting the settings to your taste you I would recommend saving it as a TIFF to preserve the information. You can convert the TIFF to Jpeg to upload etc after your done with final processing.

Using this method you will always have the original RAW and have the option to reprocess anytime either into a color or B&W image. It’s the best way to have all your options still open anytime you want to go back.

BTW the Nex 3/5 do have a B&W setting. It is under “Creative styles” just as it is in the IDC. Shoot in RAW + Jpeg and you will still have a RAW image to go back to and the Jpeg will come out B&W. The RAW file is just literally raw data so it can still be processed in color if you choose.
